No matter if it rains or snows, we hold the scrambled eggs festival on the first day of spring, 21 March, each year. Now we are making Zenica scrambled eggs. The weather today is poor, it's raining, but nothing can prevent us." 20. Wide of men eating scrambled eggs 21. Or at least that is what the people in Zenica, central Bosnia, believe. Each year, they gather on the banks of the Bosnia River on the first day of spring to fry thousands of eggs and eat them together. "Egg frying is in fact a symbol of a new beginning, a new life," explains one Zenica resident, Faruk Kadric. Local restaurant owners compete in who will make a bigger portion and the record set this year went to a team who fried 1,500 eggs in one huge pan. The tradition known as 'Cimburijada' or 'the Festival of Scrambled Eggs' dates back at least a century, but while nobody really knows its origins, Zenica residents are more than happy to have it continue. "No matter if it rains or snows, we hold the scrambled eggs festival on the first day of spring, 21 March, each year," says Dzevad Mikanovic, as he stirs his own pan of scrambled eggs as a small group of Zenica residents look on. "Now we are making Zenica scrambled eggs. The weather today is poor, it's raining, but nothing can prevent us." In fact, they are so proud of it that they want to nominate it for inclusion on the United Nations Cultural and Scientific Organisation's (UNESCO) intangible world heritage list.
