The Crayfish Vs. The Newt
An invasive crayfish is thriving in Oregon's Crater Lake as the waters warm – putting the lake’s clarity and native creatures in jeopardy. About 100 years ago the exotic crustaceans were brought in to be food for the game fish that had been stocked in the lake. Today, most of those fish are gone but the crayfish live on -- and they’re crowding out a native species that actually belongs there: the Mazama newt.
