Mahmoud Abdel Karim Mizmar Group / Aswan
Recorded in Aswan for the forthcoming compilation Mono Egypt. Mizmar is a woodwind two-reed instrument related to an oboe. Also known as zamr, it can be found in many regions of the Middle East and North Africa. Its Turkish counterpart is zurna, the Algerian one is rhaita. In Egypt, there are three variants of mizmar differing in length (tones); a trio of such instruments, accompanied by the rhythm of tabla (an Egyptian goblet drum also known as darabuka), a pair of bass drums, form an ensemble also called “mizmar”.
