True oysters are known for their palatability to humans and while they are capable of producing pearls, they aren't the same oysters that are raised specifically for that purpose. Pearl oysters are separate from "true" oysters! True oysters live in tropical and temperate marine waters around the world. They are most closely associated with coastlines and estuaries where they can tolerate brackish water. Oysters gather in large groups they end up creating reef habitats in which other animals like fish and crustaceans use as their homes! These oyster reefs also act as erosion barriers for shorelines.
