New Emperor Penguin Chick | SeaWorld® San Deigo

When SeaWorld® San Diego's new emperor penguin chick was brought into the Penguin Encounter® for the first time since she hatched on Sept. 12, more than 300 penguins immediately waddled over to her, vocalizing loudly, as if to warmly welcome her to the colony. The most interested of the five species were, of course, the other emperor penguins. With the help of the park's aviculturists — who have been hand-raising the chick in a behind-the-scenes penguin nursery — the chick is being gradually introduced to the adult penguins each day. Once she is big enough, has water-proofed feathers and is ready to swim, she will join the entire group, which includes emperor, gentoo, macaroni, Adélie and king penguins, in their 25-degree habitat. At hatching, the female chick weighed just 12 ounces and today weighed in at 11 pounds. The largest of all penguin species, emperors can reach 3½ feet tall and can weigh up to 90 pounds. This chick is the first emperor hatching at SeaWorld® San Die
