In 1979, founding Museum Chairman Elie Wiesel asserted that, "A memorial unresponsive to the future would violate the memory of the past." Guided by this principle, the Museum has worked diligently to bring attention to genocide in the contemporary world and to lead efforts to prevent mass atrocities.
